Building a final ammonia removal stage

Building a final ammonia removal stage.

Reliable and energy-efficient tertiary ammonia removal with Mutag BioChip™ in municipal wastewater treatment.

Project:
Wastewater and sludge treatment center.

Industry:
Municipal sewage.

Facts & figures:

  • Flow rate is 90.000 m3/day volume
  • 410 m3 Mutag BioChipTM
  • NH4-N removal = 500 kg/day
  • Tertiary ammonia removal
  • In operation since 2021
  • Easy to operate and maintain

Task:
To stay within the ammonia permit, an additional stage of treatment was required.

Solution:
In 2021, a new MBBR tank was introduced to handle part of the flow from the upstream activated sludge plant. By blending the MBBR effluent with the existing plant flow, ammonia limits could be reliably met. We engineered the aeration system, tank design and carrier retention screen, and supplied our Mutag BioChipTM to deliver robust tertiary ammonia removal.

Results:
The plant now consistently meets ammonia permit requirements under all conditions. The system runs with high efficiency and low energy use, with no signs of wear or inactive biomass. The plant benefits from reliable full-capacity performance, keeping compliance simple.
